(P2) Focus of a Radio Station

BangShift.com Tune In: Live, Free Streaming Drag Racing From Santa Pod in England This Weekend! Nitro, Sportsmen, and Hydrogen Peroxide Rocket Action! - BangShift.com

This post is aimed towards the focus and theme of a specific radio station. I have chosen Nitro FM (96.2), where I will explain the show, and what they program to suit their style and needs for a specific radio station such as Nitro FM. I will also explain the differences between Nitor Fm's listening population and figures to other stations.

Nitro Fm is a very local radio station owned by Santa Pod Raceway, which is in Wellingborough, England. Nitro Fm will only stream on live racing weekends at Santa Pod Raceway, however it is listened to by fans from all over the world, with quite a few being from America. The radio station will have many different activities. they play music in the morning and evening when there is not racing. This is for people that are camping on the grounds to tune into in their tents or caravans. The music that they play usually is modern and classic rock, and mainly indie music. However, they take online requests from people so in those times they will play any genre.

Nitro Fm is a standalone regional station and completely self-funded. They are accessible from across the world but are targeted mainly towards people who are at the track, watching the racing, and the radio is also played by speakers along the viewer sides of the track, so that people can hear the commentator when the racing is happening. The station will run ads and music in between breaks in the racing. For example, when a crash happens and there is a half an hour break between the racing, they will play motor-aimed ads which link to the point of Santa Pod, and then play rock and indie music to pass the time between the racing. They will also advertise on site activities such as market stalls and their merchandise shops. They also stream things such as live music shows that they have at Santa Pod on Nitro FM.

Nitro Fm is distributed by FM radio (frequency modulation). This means that people will have to input the number 96.2 into an FM radio in their car. This is quite an old fashioned way of radio but it is still a reliable way to connect to radios nowadays, as Bluetooth can stream it from your phone to your car.

The people listening to Nitro FM tend to be people that like watching and being at drag racing events, this can range from teens to older adults, from around 15-70 year old's, as older people like the history and experience of drag racing as well younger people. The target audience of Santa Pod is very broad, as the entire experience is also geared majorly for families, and they endorse family tickets at their events for a cheaper total. They will advertise this for other events whilst people are listening to the radio.

The psychometrics for this audience would more than likely fall under the 'explorer' section as it aims at a very niche audience, who like racing and the same music taste as Santa pod's radio. This means that their audience would be inclined to listen to this station as it falls in their interest. The audience of this radio show is also a very limited group of people, despite being one of the most popular events in the UK. This is because the figures for Santa Pod are usually around 25,000 listeners, which is only once a month for half the year. This means that compared to other radio stations it has a lower amount of listeners, as it is not a normal radio station.

The radio station was initially founded in 1966 as purely a track side broadcast of the racing that was happening, and then it was turned into a full radio show that followed the racing. The station became a more common thing to audiences and gained listeners in the early 2000's, as the event started to gain media attention and more popularity among visitors.

The Station now also stream online, on an audio streaming website called www.doyousee.me. This is where people can listen to the radio station online if they cannot make it to an event. This means that their radio station crosses over all online media, as people can stream online and in their car, or they can tune in from an Fm radio that they may have at home.
